stampede 101

July 14, 2013 By Fareen 1 Comment

Despite the devastation of the recent flood, the Calgary Stampede went ahead as planned.  Thanks to the many volunteers, you could never guess that just a few weeks ago, the Stampede grounds were flooded.

We managed to make it to the grounds twice this year. Here’s a little glimpse of what we ate.

Milk and cookies. The cheapest deal on the grounds for only $1.
The Naaco TNT from the Naaco Truck. The ultimate indian snack. Made with cornflakes, chickpeas, puffed rice and other goodness topped with tamarind chutney. Yum!
Deep fried butter! Flaky pastry encompassing melted butter. A must try but definitely a shareable.
A jalapeno corn dog. We found a place on the grounds that made them with chicken/beef weiners.
Pineapple whip ice cream.
Good ole slurpee.

world partnership walk

June 7, 2013 By Fareen Leave a Comment

This Sunday, head on down to Prince’s Island for the annual World Partnership Walk. This walk has been around for almost thirty years and it’s a tradition in many households, like mine. This walk has grown over the years and it’s so great to now have my son participate. He’s collecting funds this year and if you’d like to make a donation, we would be most grateful.

Funds raised at this walk go directly to fund international development projects. What makes this different than other fundraisers? 100% of funds raised by the World Partnership Walk go directly to the projects – not one cent is spent on administration!

Click here to check out the many activities happening at the event. After the walk, there are some awesome food vendors which include some of Calgary’s awesome food trucks. Check out the menu below.

Hope to see you there!

an evening at muse

April 8, 2013 By Fareen Leave a Comment

It’s been two weeks and I’m still thinking about the fabulous meal that I had at Muse. It had been a few years since I had been to Muse and I was excited to have been invited to the Media Showcase.  New owners Heather Wighton and Stephen Deere along with their Executive Chef JP Pidhirney invited some Calgary food lovers to try out a few of their amazing offerings.

The evening started mingling with fellow foodies while enjoying drinks and fresh shucked oysters. This was followed by a tasting menu complete with wine pairings.

Highlights of the five course meal were the fresh hamachi and the succulent lamb. Here’s a recap of the delicious meal that we enjoyed:

An amuse bouche consisting of Pears and Crispy Chicken Skin in a Rutabaga Cream Bisque.

Hamachi with Coriander and Lime Vin, Radishes, Red Chili’s and Togarashi

Potato Risotto with Green Peas, Truffles and a Sous Vide Egg

Grilled Sturgeon with Beet Ribbon, Brussel Sprouts, served with a Borscht Consomme and Caviar Creme Fraiche

Grilled Lamb Saddle with Crispy Lamb Belly, Cippolini Onion, Farinata and a Black Olive Emulsion.

A palate cleanser of a Crab Apple Soda

Chocolate Cremaux with Toasted Meringue, Sweet Potato Sorbet and Lemon Gel.

mint and chocolate

December 9, 2012 By Fareen Leave a Comment

Mint and chocolate.  What a perfect combination. It works well with coffee (peppermint mochas, yum!), cookies and definitely dessert.  It was the inspiration for some cupcakes I made a couple months ago for hubby’s birthday.  Although I had made some ice cream cake to celebrate at home, I thought it would be fun to send some cupcakes for him to celebrate at work.  Hubby’s co-workers were treated to After Eight Cupcakes – chocolate cake topped with peppermint buttercream.

The combination worked well and so I made them again this weekend. Instead of using the chocolate as a garnish, I used candy canes.  The Candy Cane Cupcakes were made for the Food Blogger Bake Sale.

A Holiday Edition of the bake sale was created to raise funds for Meals on Wheels.  Fellow food bloggers Vincci and Dan have worked hard in planning and promoting this event – you guys are awesome!  When I went down this morning, the tables were full of yummy goodies and creative packaging.  The event has been extended to tomorrow so be sure to go down to Casel Marche, try some wonderful baking while benefiting a great cause.

oliv tasting room…and a giveaway!

October 25, 2012 By Fareen 2 Comments

A couple of weeks ago, we checked out the Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival.  Among all the tables sampling various wines and amazing food, there was the Oliv Tasting Room, giving tasters of balsamic vinegar and olive oil. The balsamic vinegar that I tried was thick and syrupy, like it had been reducing on the stove for a while.  It was amazing!

In the few minutes we spent with the owner, Isabeau, we learned all about their lovely oils made in South Africa on their farm and their amazing vinegars sourced directly from Italy.  She also told us about the various ways olive oil is made and how theirs is a true olive oil, not altered with any chemicals. This means a healthier oil.  The balsamic is also of high quality, and it was apparent with every taste.

In their two locations in Saskatchewan and one in Calgary (100-1130 Kensington Road N.W.) the Oliv Tasting Room has samplings, where you can go in and try out the 60+ flavours of oils and vinegars.

Since taking the balsamic vinegar home, we have tried it on everything – from sweet slow roasted tomatoes to crunchy kale chips.  We even tried it on ice cream!

Want to try some for yourself?  Write a comment either here or on Facebook, or send me a tweet.  Contest closes on Monday, October 29th (hubby’s birthday!) at noon.  The winner will have to pick up their prize directly from the store, so Calgary and area only please.  Good luck!

celebrating apple month at home tasting room

February 15, 2012 By Fareen Leave a Comment

Hubby and I had date night earlier this month celebrating apple month.  BC Tree Fruits hosted an event at Home Tasting Room where, along with other bloggers and media, we sampled apple inspired food prepared by Chef Rogers.

I’m not a huge fan of beets but the organic beet and apple salad with fresh Calgarian mozza and house grown lemon basil was amazing.

The swiss gougere with Ambrosia apple mousse and candied pecans was a favourite among the crowd.  So light and tasty!

The Noble Farms duck and apple pastilla with ambrosia apple gastrique was hubby’s favorite.  The combination of the apple and the duck in the flaky pastry was definitely a winner.

Another tasty bite with the Braeburn apple and fig tart with organic cold smoked cheddar and sailor jerry cream.

We were also able to view a cooking demo where Chef Rogers prepared a Sous vide Broek Acres pork belly.  He was also kind enough to prepare a non-pork version for us, AAA Alberta beef hanger with apple foam and puree.  Delicious!

It was a great evening tasting the delicious bites and learning about the apple picking and production process.  One of my favourite tips provided by Darcel, a nutritionist with BC Tree Fruits and a grower herself, was putting grated apple in various dishes.  Any way to sneak in fruits and veggies is always a good thing.  From the delicious food that we sampled, it was evident that apples can be incorporated into any kind of dish, both sweet and savoury.  Check out the BC Tree Fruits website for lots of apple recipes.

You have until the end of the month to participate in BC Tree Fruits “Artful Apple” contest and win prizes like an Okanagan vacation.

brunch with foodies

October 3, 2011 By Fareen 4 Comments

Last Sunday, we enjoyed a fabulous brunch at Julie‘s house.  Charmian Christie, a food writer and blogger from Ontario, was in town and Julie graciously invited some local food bloggers for a potluck.   Julie has the best potlucks and this was another hit.

Julie made some lovely scones which were amazing with clotted cream.  It was great seeing Vincci again and she made a very delicious deep dish french toast.  This is definitely something I will try making soon.  I finally met Dan for the first time.  I’ve been following him on twitter for so long, I feel like I’ve known him forever!  He made a quiche topped with roasted tomatoes.

It was fun to meet Pierre, author of Kitchen Scraps.  As promised, he brought something roasty and toasty – welsh rarebit, and something jiggly and fruity – a gelatin infused with lemon verbena and loads of berries.

Gwendolyn made a very yummy glazed applesauce cake.  It was great meeting Wendy from Yelp who brought a delicious baked oatmeal dish.  My friend Cheryl brought a tomato crisp as well as some chocolate tonka bean scones. Both were amazing!

Along with some mini egg cups, I brought some coconut cake pops.  This is my new venture as Sweet Somethings by Food Mamma.  These aren’t the traditional cake pops of crumbled cake and icing made into balls.  These are pure balls of delicious cake.  I was a bit nervous bringing these to some food aficionados.

Thanks for another great potluck Julie!

potluck at julie’s

June 1, 2011 By Fareen 1 Comment

This weekend, we attended a community potluck at Julie’s house.  Inspired by a potluck she attended in Tofino, Julie, from Dinner with Julie, bravely invited the internet (!) to her house for a fun little get together.

Julie and her husband Mike were gracious hosts and made everyone feel welcome.  It was great to meet her devoted readers and eat their delicious assortment of food.  It was also nice to catch up with fellow food bloggers, Cheryl from Backseat Gourmet and Gail from The Pink Peppercorn.

Q had a lot of fun with the kids in the back yard and hubby enjoyed himself as well.  The food was amazing!  Ranging from cookies, salads, vegetables and even fresh bread, it was nice to try a little bit of everything.  I especially loved the quinoa salad which we made tonight and had for dinner.  It will definitely be a regular at our house!

It was hard trying to decide what to bring to a potluck, and at Julie’s house no less.  I brought along dhokra, savoury steamed cakes made with wheatlets.  I figured it was something different for everyone to try.  I also made some red pepper shrimp which I stuffed in to puff pastry shells.  For those that asked, the recipe for the shrimp can be found here.  For the shells, I cut little squares of ready made puff pastry which I put into muffin molds and baked at 325 degrees for about 20 minutes until they were golden.

Thanks again to Julie for the great gathering!
