February 17, 2016 By Fareen 41 Comments

It’s February, a time when many people may have broken their New Year’s resolutions. Sometimes it’s hard to stick with it, no matter how great your intentions are. We tried something easy this year, incorporating smoothies as part of our daily routine and getting more fruits and veggies into us.

Nature’s Path wants to help you stay on a healthy path by two amazing giveaways!

The first way is a chance to win granola for a year. They want to know what’s on your path for 2016 by posting on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using both hashtags: #OnMyPath and #GranolaForAYear. The prize includes everything you need to get back on a healthy path including: Nature’s Path granola and organic breakfast foods for a year, DIY Vegan, by Nicole Axworthy & Lisa Pitman – recipe book including more than 100 ways to create an awesome plant-based pantry and Un-Junk Your Diet by Desiree Nielsen, R.D. – how to shop, cook and eat to feel better forever. This contest closes on February 28, 2016.

The second way is right on this blog. There are a few ways to win (see below). The Nature’s Path #OnMyWay giveaway includes:

An assortment of Nature’s Path delicious organic & non-GMO granolas including Nature’s Path Coconut Chia Granola made with wholesome clusters whole-grain rolled oats, omega-rich chia seeds, and coconut flakes. Plus each serving is naturally packed with 6 grams of plant protein and 5 grams of fibre!
Free product vouchers
A printed copy of the new Nature’s Path 7 Days of Healthy Recipes & Lifestyle Tips Ebook

I received a box of these goodies and they are delicious. Especially good on top of my smoothies – they provide the perfect crunch!

Contest closes February 24th. Contest is open to Canadian and US residents only. US or Canadian shipping address must be provided. An email will be sent to the winner. The winner will have 24 hours to respond before a new winner is chosen.

All prizes will be shipping after March 1, 2016. Good luck!

green tropical smoothie

January 21, 2016 By Fareen Leave a Comment

We have been enjoying our daily smoothies and I have been having fun coming up with some tasty combinations. Today was a good one and I could not wait to share.

The spinach smoothies haven’t been a favourite for the boys…until today. Today, they wanted more! That is a huge win. The greens combined with the tropical flavours of pineapple, banana and coconut worked really well together. The pineapple added the sweetness and the banana and coconut milk the creaminess. The coconut milk also made it dairy free so even hubby could enjoy it.

This tropical concoction will allow you to escape to somewhere warm, even if just for a minute.

Green Tropical Smoothie

1/2 cup pineapple, cubed
1 banana
1/2 cup spinach
1/3 cup coconut milk
1/2 cup water
ice

Place all the ingredients and blend until smooth.

berry banana smoothie

January 14, 2016 By Fareen 1 Comment

With all the smoothies we have been experimenting with, one thing has been clear – Q’s not a fan of the green ones. They may taste great, but the colour to him is just off putting. Z on the other hand will drink anything, he’s more about the taste than the visual appeal.

This berry banana smoothie is a hit with everyone. The blackberries and strawberries along with the banana make a great combination. The banana along with some yogurt and milk make this drink super creamy and so delicious.

Berry Banana Smoothie

1/2 cup blackberries
1/2 cup strawberries
1 banana
1/2 cup yogurt
1 cup milk
Ice

Blend until smooth.

Our smoothie kick continues! Q loves the combination of strawberries and bananas so that’s the flavours we went with today. I added a clementine for some citrus zing and added milk and yogurt to make this creamy concoction.

resolutions, ninjas and green smoothies

January 6, 2016 By Fareen Leave a Comment

January is here and we are back to school and back to routine. I try and stay away from resolutions, they always seem short-lived. There is something that needed implementing around here though, and the new year seems like the best place to start. Although we eat fruits and vegetables, I really needed us to have more. Keeping plates of cut fruits and veggies out has helped. No one can resist snacking if it’s right there, ready and waiting. Salads are an easy way to add veggies but they can become boring. Smoothies seem like the best way to add a whole whack of nutrients, changing it up everyday so that there is variety.

To help with this goal, the folks at Ninja sent me their Nutri Ninja Auto-IQ Compact System. If I could choose one word to describe this machine, it would be power. I loved watching it break down spinach and grind ice into a smooth refreshing drink. With this Ninja, you have a nutrient and vitamin extractor as well as a high performance blender – it pulverizes any vegetable or seed. On top of all that, it comes with a Blend and Prep bowl, making this powerful blender into a full food processor. Hubby’s quite happy about this fact, hoping to get rid of a few of my appliances.

I loved this recipe for a refreshing green smoothie. With apples, lemon and ginger, along with a big helping of spinach, this drink was pretty delicious. I never thought I’d say that about a spinach smoothie! Watch for more smoothie recipes over the next couple of weeks and check out this board on Pinterest for inspiration.

Disclaimer – I was sent a Nutri Ninja Auto-IQ Compact System to try out and keep. All opinions are my own.

Sweet Spinach Detox
From Ninja

1 green apple, cut in 2-inch chunks
1/2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled
1/4 lemon, peeled, seeds removed
1/2 cup baby spinach
1/2 cup apple juice
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 cup ice

Place all ingredients into the 24-ounce Tritan Nutri Ninja in the order listed.
Select Auto-IQ™ BLEND.

avocado, banana and raspberry smoothie for williams-sonoma smoothie week

December 30, 2014 By Fareen 5 Comments

After days of turkey leftovers, stuffing and potatoes, Williams-Sonoma’s Smoothie Week comes at the perfect time. We are all out of sorts when school is out and it’s easy to fall out of routine. Smoothies are a great way to ensure that all of us are still getting in our fruits and vegetables.

This smoothie is a new favourite of ours. I love the creaminess that avocados bring to smoothies, not to mention all the fiber and the good fats that it adds. As much as Q likes avocados, he’s always skeptical to have them in his drink.  The taste of the avocado is subtle though and when paired with bananas and raspberries, he had no clue.

Avocado, Banana and Raspberry Smoothie

1/2 ripe avocado
1 banana
1/2 cup raspberries
milk

Throw everything into a blender and enjoy!
